Software Development Job Market In The US

The negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic are still felt by many industries and job markets alike. But the software development job market remains to be unconquered.

Today’s global crisis has amplified the need for business tech development. Companies are forced to find solutions quickly. Recruitment managers are searching for tech talent and they can’t hire fast enough.

Simultaneously, developers from all over the world are also adjusting to the new normal. Instead of working in the office, most have set up workstations in their homes.

Now, for software developers thinking of widening their professional horizons, what’s in store for them? And for business owners looking to hire more software developers, how competitive is the recruitment market? Here is some insight that both entrepreneurs and software developers should take note of.

Open Potentials for Applicants in the Software Development Job Market

The current software development job market is rich in opportunities. Recruiters are searching for tech talent to cater to necessary tech positions in 2022, not necessarily planning for future growth. Naturally, companies are also taking this time to review the methods used to interview and hire the best software developers in order to stay attractive to potential candidates.

This information is evident in the Tech Hiring Survey report conducted by CoderPad and CodinGame. The survey respondents were composed of nearly 14,000 developers and recruiters who provided data from October to December 2021. The respondents came from 131 countries.

In the data pool gathered from the recruiters, 35% are planning to hire more than 50 developers in 2022. Hiring managers aiming to recruit 201 to 500 developers have also doubled compared to those in 2021.

Recruitment Trends in Software Development Job Market in 2022

In 2022, more than 50% of recruiters are planning to increase their budget. This is in preparation for the expenses of onboarding new developers. The higher budget may be the result of higher salary demand by developers within the software development job market.

To supplement the software developer job market data in terms of salary, Hired.com also released the 2022 State of Software Engineers. The site’s annual report is based on the data gathered by its unique AI drive platform matching tech and sales talent with big companies.

Josh Brenner, the CEO of Hired, said there were two significant changes in the industry. First, salary growth is evident across companies in the U.S., Canada, and the UK as they attempt to stay ahead in the competitive market.

The second change is in terms of the geographical talent pool specifically. There is an increase in companies’ interest in recruiting developers, both onshore and offshore.

Brenner said that companies should offer a competitive salary, work flexibility, and other benefits to hiring top tech talent. Moreover, organizations need to expand their “talent pipelines outside of traditional technology hubs to other regions globally.”

In addition to that, the most in-demand skills are related to web development, AI, machine learning, and DevOps. Other specializations, like database software and cloud computing, are also in high demand.

Most interesting, perhaps, is that Java, JavaScript, and Python are the top three programming languages that hiring managers are looking for in 2022. Job applicants with a skill set related to C#, C++, and C programming languages are also in-demand.

According to recruiters, the most challenging positions to fill were full-stack engineers and back-end engineers. Most companies are also struggling to find developers who are skilled in the following areas:

Reassessing the Hiring Process

There is a surge in developer demand within the software development job market globally. This makes it that much more challenging for recruiters to secure qualified tech talent using traditional hiring methods and job criteria.

That is why hiring managers proactively reassess the recruitment process to meet the demands of the increasing software development job market. Compared to the previous years, it’s not enough to review candidates’ resumes anymore.

Fifty-seven percent of recruiters are ready to remove the submission of CVs and resumes. More professionals (from 23% in 2021 to 39% in 2022) hire developers from non-academic backgrounds.

Meanwhile, 42% of recruiters use skill-based assessment solutions, such as technical assessment tests and live interviews. Most recruiters are also planning to consider candidate experience as the top priority.

Why is there a paradigm shift in the hiring process? HR professionals are looking to remove resume and CV submission since it doesn’t fully evaluate the candidate’s skill set.

The amount of qualified candidates who are self-taught or trained outside of the standard university setting is increasing. Hence, In turn, many recruitment managers give more value to the candidate’s actual skills over their formal training.
