Here are some important performance metrics that address various facets of software development. Weโ€™ll break them down into three types of metrics: technical, productivity, and customer standards. 

Technical Metrics

First, weโ€™ll discuss the technical KPIs when it comes to measuring team performance metrics. These measurements are concerned with the performance of the software itself. Contextualizing the data that these metrics provide is incredibly helpful for the development process. Software failure can get quite expensive. This is why setting KPIs is crucial to compare the costs of various software mistakes and the costs of resolving them. 

Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF)

As its name suggests, this metric is used to evaluate how long it takes for software to make mistakes or fail. The longer, the better, in this case, as this shows that the software is operating properly.

Application Crash Rate

This gauges how frequently an application crashes compared to how frequently it is utilized. Things are moving in the correct way if the number is low or declining. If the MTBF is lengthy and the MTTR is short, there might be an acceptable low-level crash rate, but that will depend on how each crash affects the organization’s bottom line.

Escaped Defects

This determines how many software issuesโ€”or the percentage of overall defectsโ€”were discovered after the product had been deployed. When end users see a lot of mistakes, there may be an issue with the QA and testing environment.

Mean Time To Recover (MTTR)

Although it would be ideal if our software products never crashed, this is not practical. Therefore, understanding how quickly things can be corrected when they go wrong is equally important. A “Mean Time To Detect” metric that measures how quickly a team responds to a problem after it arises is also considered to demonstrate how long it takes a team to notice a bug or issue.

How to Improve Team Performance

Productivity Metrics

These metrics gauge a developer team’s productivity and spot any issues that might be hampering workflow. They often provide a rough estimate of how long it takes a team to develop a workable software idea. 

Lead Time 

This refers to the length of time it takes to build software features from conception to conclusion. The period of time between placing an order and receiving a good or service is often seen as a metric from the user’s or client’s perspective. In most cases, you want this to be as little as possible to decrease client wait times, but obviously, this shouldn’t be at the expense of product quality.

Cycle Time

Cycle time is commonly confused with lead time, but it only gauges how long a task or project takes once the work has begun. Take ordering takeout as an example: lead time calculates the amount of time it takes from the client placing the order to them receiving the meal. While cycle time determines how long it takes the chef to create the order or the driver to deliver the food. Cycle time locates potential production workflow bottlenecks.

Velocity

The number of ‘units’ of work a development team can complete in a predetermined amount of time (a ‘sprint’) corresponds to this metric. A team’s average velocity can be utilized over time as a prediction of how productive they would likely be during a single “sprint,” providing a standard against which performance to evaluate. 

If a team’s velocity deviates significantly from the norm, there can be a process disruption to assess and, if necessary, repair. Take note that given differing conditions, targets, and objectives, more than velocity may be needed to compare performance across different teams.

Sprint Burndown

This is closely related to velocity as it illustrates a chart that displays the rate of task completion and the remaining work. It can assist project managers in monitoring if a sprint is proceeding according to plan and putting temporary remedies in place when something goes wrong. Additionally, the burndown will offer insightful data that will help optimize sprint scheduling in the future.

Customer Metrics

Lastly are the metrics from the end usersโ€™ side. These metrics are used to measure how satisfied customers are with the software. Given the subjective nature of user experiences and the challenges in engaging customers, this is a difficult task. However, this can provide crucial insight into whether the product is living up to expectations or falling short.

The Net Promoter Score (NPS)

This metric gauges a customer’s propensity to promote your goods or services to others. It is a sign of how devoted your customers are, and sustaining long-term relationships depends on this.

Customer Satisfaction Score (CSAT)

Another indicator that depends on customers delivering truthful feedback is the CSAT. In any case, the objective is to obtain the best score possible and see that number increase over time.
